President Abinader has a full agenda of world leaders awaiting

President Luis Abinader had had a low profile in international circles since he took power on August 16. The pandemic and economic crisis triggered by Covid-19 kept the president focused on opening up the country and reactivating tourism.

Tonight, the president is leaving for his second official journey after taking power to participate in the XXVII Ibero-American Summit of Heads of State and Government in Andorra, where he will take up the pro tempore secretariat, meaning the Dominican Republic will host will be the one I think for the next two years.

Abinader’s maiden voyage was limited to attending the inauguration of Puerto Rico Governor Pedro Pierluisi.

The president will travel on Air Europa flight UX 088 via Las Américas International Airport, José Francisco Peña Gómez, who plans to arrive at Madrid Barajas Adolfo Suárez Airport tomorrow Sunday at 11 a.m.

Abinader will fulfill a broad agenda that will include meetings with King Felipe VI; the President of the Government of Spain, Pedro Sánchez Pérez, and the former Presidents José María Aznar and Felipe González.

The Presidency’s administrative minister, José Ignacio Paliza, said the president will begin to adopt a profile of greater visibility in international settings from this meeting. “It was very focused on national issues in the midst of the pandemic, but as time goes on, it will also play a role in the international debate, and this summit is a space for this,” Paliza said.

The minister explained that the president also “will take advantage” to strengthen ties between the two countries and entities related to foreign investment in the country.

“It will also benefit, as Spain is one of our main commercial partners, where a large part of the tourism investment in the Dominican Republic comes from Spain, to maintain ties with the Spanish government, its President, the King of Spain and some associates. The president has reiterated repeatedly that one of the Dominican government’s main problems is the situation in Haiti, a country in the midst of a political crisis. President, so that with international help a solution can be found for migration to our territory and improvements for Haitian citizens in their country.

The country is undergoing a process of police reform, so the president is expected to address in his speech the issue of citizen safety, job creation and the reintegration of young people who are not studying or working.

Following a meeting with the Spanish government tomorrow Sunday, the president will visit the headquarters of the World Tourism Organization and meet with leaders in Spain from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the summit will be held virtually and only representatives from the Dominican Republic, Spain, Portugal, Guatemala and Andorra, the host country, will be present.

Guatemala will participate personally because it was the previous location and the Dominican Republic because it will be next in 2022. Representatives from the other 17 Ibero-American countries will intervene virtually.
