Alfred Molina first took on the nuclear physicist turned megalomaniac, Otto Octavius in the 2004 Tobey Maguire-LED Spider-Man 2. He reprises the role now more than 15 years later in the Tom Hollandpayment Spider-Man: No Way HomeMolina told Variety that he was “ordered not to talk about it” while shooting. In Spider-Man 2a lab accident turns Peter Parker’s prospective mentor into the murderous Doc Ock – aptly named for the mechanical tentacles that shoot from his back. Doc Ock comes into direct conflict with Peter Parker as he longs to perfect his experimental fusion reactor at all costs. Doc Ock wreaks havoc in New York City until Parker appeals to the benevolence and humanity that lie deep beneath Ock’s mean surface. Ock then abandons himself and his reactor in the East River, leading to his eventual demise.

Spider-Man: No Way Home must explain how Doc Ock returned from the dead, to which Watts said, “In this universe, no one really dies.” His return will reportedly pick up from that “last” moment in the river, presumably putting some multiverse magic in control. While Marvel Studios was rarely disappointed with the story, Molina shared the personal dilemmas he faced around his return.
Speaking of the role, Molina explained that he was concerned about his physicality. He understood that technical effects could visually remove the years, but could not reverse the aging process in terms of movement. Molina referred The Irishman, share: ‘They made Robert de Niro‘s face younger, but when he was fighting he looked like an older man. He looked like an old man! That’s what worried me to do it again. Still, Molina then remembered a crucial detail: “the tentacles do all the work!” Molina explained that “the arms do all the killing, hitting and breaking,” and that he just had to hold a threatening expression on the camera.
While neither Sony nor Marvel have explicitly confirmed the actor’s return, the news has been out for quite some time, and this interview just gave fans a bit of information to theorize about. No way home is currently scheduled to premiere on December 17, 2021.
