Puerto Rican Red Sox manager Alex Cora said he was proud to wear the number 42 on his mask on Jackie Robinson Day on Thursday, and even more proud to wear it on his back again.
As she evolved and grew in the Dodgers organization, Cora immersed herself in all that Robinson achieved as a vanguard and the heroic way he did it.
“When I was with the Dodgers, I remember, Sharon [Robinson] and I did something for some kids early in the day [en el Día de Jackie Robinson]Cora said. “I think Dave Roberts was involved that time too, and it’s very special.
“Because they have evolved within the Dodgers organization, they not only talk about the history of the game, but they also teach you a lot of things and, just to think about the things that Jackie didn’t just do as a player; He was a great, fantastic athlete, but it was impressive to have the burden and weight of all people on his shoulders and to perform not only on but also off the field. It’s unreal ”.
As a Puerto Rican, Cora clearly worships fellow countryman and legend Roberto Clemente. But he understands that Robinson was the one who broke down barriers to all minorities in baseball.
“As a Latino, yes, you know how we feel about Roberto Clemente,” Cora exclaimed. “We wouldn’t have Roberto Clemente without Jackie Robinson. It’s that simple. I wouldn’t have been a manager or a Major League player without Jackie Robinson. I am lucky enough to meet his family and it is a very special day ”.
