SPOILER ALERT: Don’t read ahead if you haven’t watched Season 5, Episode 6 of “The Masked Singer,” which aired on Fox April 14.
Wherever Mark McGrath goes, people will stop and they will see the Orca.
The Sugar Ray singer and former ‘Extra’ presenter was the latest celebrity to be revealed on ‘The Masked Singer’, where he had performed as the Orca. McGrath sang Poison’s “Every Rose Has Its Thorn” for his second and final performance.
“I think it might be the only competitor in ‘The Masked Singer’ history whose costume is much cooler than it is in real life,” said McGrath of his costume. “When I saw the Orca, I thought, oh my god, it’s perfect. I have some headroom. I thought energy would be my goal. It was never going to be my five-octave vocal range that we know doesn’t exist. I’d have to make it with a little bit of chutzpa and rock and roll, and lots of luck, and the killer whale costume really lent me that. “
None of the show’s panellists found out it was McGrath. Robin Thicke and Ken Jeong thought it was Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg suspected surfer Kelly Slater, and Nicole Scherzinger thought it was Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters.
“My head expanded in that orca costume,” he said. All these guesses in real time, all those Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members. My performance was good, but they have a wonderful way to really cheer up and celebrate everyone at ‘The Masked Singer’. Whether you are Rob Gronkowski or LeAnn Rimes, they will make you feel good about yourself. And that’s a nice part of the show. I was blown away to hear those guesses. “
McGrath was the show’s first “Wildcard”, released to perform mid-match. He said he didn’t know that when he went to the show.
“The Masked Singer is very good at providing information based solely on the need to know,” he said. ‘I didn’t know I came out as a wild card. In my mind, a wildcard means you had a bull’s-eye in your back. I was kind of thrown into that, because I walk out to do my first rehearsal. But when I got out there and I saw the production. It looked like one of those Ziegfeld Follies Hollywood productions of the 1930s. It looked underwater on TV so they alleviated my Wildcard concerns in a great way. “
McGrath was ready to sing Run DMC’s “It’s Tricky” for his third song when he returned. His first song was We’re Not Gonna Take It, ”by Twisted Sister.
“What attracted me the most about ‘The Masked Singer’ is that it scared me,” he said. ‘I was shocked because it is a singing competition. Now you might think, your career is as a singer / entertainer. [But] no one has ever confused his voice with Pavarotti or Chris Martin. But being someone else in the mask was clearly attractive to me.
“What I didn’t know is what an emotional component this show would have for me,” he said. “You become part of this mysterious adventure park atmosphere. It’s the world of costumes and fantasies. You breathe life into this thing, into this killer whale, and when I took the mask off last time, there’s no more life, essentially this killer whale is gone. It was so much fun to be a part of that, making fun of people when you were singing as part of the Orca’s aura and being. I have 10 year old twins and that was a big part of why I did it. And what a great opportunity in a year when people don’t do many things in the music industry. What a ride it was. “
McGrath said Sugar Ray has started performing again, including gigs in Orlando and Tampa, and the band’s summer dates are starting to fill up.
“I’m excited to see if anything happens to this ‘Masked Singer’,” he said. Once you’re part of the Masked Singer, you’re part of the family too. They do tours and things like that. I’ll let them know I’m available for whatever you need. I’m here for ‘The Masked Singer’. “
Meanwhile, Nick Cannon was back as a full-time host, having previously been quarantined for COVID-19. Niecy Nash guest-hosted “The Masked Singer” for the show’s first five episodes, until Cannon was exposed as the Bulldog last week.
This season’s costumes include raccoon, seashell, black swan, snail, grandpa monster, phoenix, chameleon, russian doll (s), porcupine, piglet and wildcards orca, crab and bulldog. Cannon as the Bulldog joins previously unmasked celebrities Nick Cannon (Bulldog), Logan Paul (Grandpa Monster), Danny Trejo (as Raccoon), Caitlyn Jenner (as Phoenix) and Kermit the Frog (as Snail).
Season 5 contestants collectively have 26 Grammy nominations, nine multi-platinum singles, four Academy Award nominations, three Super Bowl appearances, six gold medals, and two world records.
The show’s panelists also once compete for a “Golden Ear” trophy based on their first impressions of each masked performer (which McCarthy won last time). Jeong and McCarthy Wahlberg had a point so far, on the way to this episode.
McCarthy Wahlberg and Scherzinger’s first impressions were both Dave Grohl, Thicke went with Billie Joe Armstrong, while Jeong was Jon Bon Jovi. None of them picked up a point.

Russian Dolls (three participants)
Song: “Wanna Want Me”, by Jason Derulo
Cannon designation: “What Goes Around … Comes Around.” “We had been together for a while, but as fate wanted it, it was time to get back on stage together.”
Panel guesses: Pentatonix, the Jonas Brothers, 98 degrees
Voice over: “When this duo became a trio for the last time, it really was a game changer. Performing on this epic stage is a long way from where we started. Life on the road was by no means glamorous. We performed everywhere from parking lots to softball fields. But we put our heart and soul into every performance. And the years of excitement paid off when we finally got the chance to act for the president. And we crushed it. We raised the roof. From the White House. And now we rely on that hardworking spirit to get us to the Super 8. “
Previous songs: “Man in the Mirror”, by Michael Jackson; “Wonder”, by Shawn Mendes
Guesses from the previous panel: Boyz II Men; Vanessa Hudgens; Darren Criss, Matthew Morrison, Kevin McHale or other “Glee” stars; Gwen Stefani and No Doubt guitarist Tom Dumont, Sugarland, Boyz II Men, Jacksons

Cannon designation: “AKA.” “My first show, they came out and said porcupine, and I said no, I’m Robopine. So, AKA. “
Guess panel: Jamie Foxx, Will Smith, Terence Howard
Voice over: The spines are out tonight and I’m ready to unleash some magic on that stage. I wasn’t sure what to expect from this masked adventure. But now I’m on a mission to make it to the end. And I know a good mission because I’ve done one my entire career. A quest for a certain golden relic. It’s been a fast action packed ride. I’ve dodged booby traps and so many times my life has almost crumbled. But I always escaped looking for that idol. But for now I’m hunting for a new idol, the golden mask. Winning it will be proof that the ultimate relic will be mine. “

Guess panel: Ashanti, Mya, Keke Palmer, Alicia Silverstone
Voice over: “I have been lucky enough to walk in different shoes throughout my career. But one of the things that I am most proud of is that I have been called a pioneer, a role model. Sometimes I get stopped when I’m shopping or at the cinema. And it is the greatest honor. Because when I was younger, shells like me didn’t get many opportunities to be seen. But I fought the current that flowed against me. And now seeing so many people follow my path, that’s what keeps me strong. Now tonight I can’t wait for everyone to see what I have in store as I keep shooting forward. “
Previous track: “Listen to Your Heart”, by Roxette; “Confident”, by Demi Lovato

WILDCARD: Yeti
Song: “If It Ain’t Love”, by New Edition
Cannon designation: “Aphrodite.” “Yeti is all about love, love, love.”
Panel guesses: Ray J, Justin Bieber, Taran Killam
Voice over: ‘As a Yeti, I come out of hiding alone for a tremendous reason. And here it has to be a wild force to reckon with. So be careful where you walk. Where I come from, there are still too many monsters. But I had a secret weapon. A village of warrior wives who were always there to show me the way. Having them as motivators and teachers was worth its weight in gold. And made me the hideous gentleman I am today. Knowing these warriors had my back gave me the confidence to go to the mountaintop when others wouldn’t even dare. The Yetis are usually chased from their village. But I was brought up well. Being here is a thank you to them. “
