When the president led the start of the rice harvest in Cotuí, in the province of Sánchez Ramírez, next Wednesday, he said the main food crop in the country is rice, and they depend directly on between 250 and 300,000 people involved in it. full immediate production. method.
“The Dominican Republic is considered a self-sufficient country for the production of rice, a staple crop in the diet of the Dominican population, one of the highest consumption averages in Latin America,” said the president.
The president indicated that rice production covers all regions of the country, with 1.3 million land jobs covering the entire national territory. “And this year we achieved 20% more performance per task compared to the previous period of agricultural production.”
He said a harvest of 7.6 million quintals is expected for this year, indicating that this production will be higher than last year, representing about 6.8 million quintals harvested in the spring of that year.
“For this year’s fall harvest, we hope to exceed the harvest from the same period of the previous year by more than 700 thousand quintals, reaching 5.2 million quintals to reach the 5.9 quintals harvested in 2021,” stressed he.
He emphasized that rice production contributes some 30,000 million pesos to the Dominican economy.
He indicated that there are 32,000 rice producers in the country providing more than 300,000,000 direct jobs.
