One death and three rapes in an armed attack on an orphanage in Haiti

A group of gunmen broke into an orphanage on the outskirts of Port-au-Prince on Monday, murdered a security guard and assaulted three people, including two minors, official sources reported today.

A 15-year-old girl and a 27-year-old waitress were raped and a 13-year-old boy suffered from “sexual assault,” said Arielle Jeanty Villedrouin, director of the Institute for Social Welfare and Research (IBSER). responsible for managing orphanages, said EFE.

The attack was carried out early Monday by about 15 gunmen in Croix-des-Bouquets, a town 12 kilometers from Port-au-Prince.

The bandits jumped over the gate of the orphanage, closed the doors to prevent anyone from entering or leaving, and spent at least two hours looting the place for money.

“The children have been transferred to a safer center. The raped girl has been taken to hospital where she is being treated. We will provide psychosocial support to the victims,” ​​said Villedrouin.

IBSER, UNICEF and the NGO Terre des Hommes are assisting the victims, Villedrouin added.

Haiti is experiencing a serious wave of violence perpetrated by armed gangs that dominate many areas of Port-au-Prince in the midst of the country’s political crisis.

On Sunday, twelve members of a religious group, including two of French nationality, were kidnapped in Ganthier, about 20 kilometers from the capital.
