As the number of Covid cases in the US grows, the country is also administering the vaccinations to prevent the virus from spreading at the fastest rate ever. Cases are on the rise in 27 states, with Michigan continuing to lead the nation in daily new cases per capita.

American Covid cases

After more than 70,000 coronavirus cases reported Monday, the seven-day average of daily new cases in the US is 68,960, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. That figure is 7% higher than a week ago.

Michigan again reported the highest number of daily new Covid cases per capita, according to a CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins data. Monday, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Dr. Rochelle Walensky, that the state must “shut things down” because it catches the wave and that a boost in Covid-19 vaccinations alone will not stop the virus from spreading.

Michigan records an average of nearly 7,300 new cases per day, close to the state’s pandemic peak of more than 8,300 a day in December. Hospital admissions and deaths are also on the rise in the state.

American Covid deaths

The seven-day average of Covid deaths reported daily in the US is 962, according to data from Johns Hopkins.

The latest trend in the death toll is influenced by a mass release of data from about 1,800 deaths from Oklahoma, which occurred as the Oklahoma State Department of Health moves to data reporting guidelines in line with CDC requirements. Those deaths are all currently being reported for April 7, even if they occurred earlier.

Prior to this anomaly, the US daily Covid death toll had risen down from January’s record levels.

US vaccination shots administered

CDC data shows that 2.6 million vaccine doses administered on Monday were reported, bringing the seven-day average of reported doses in the US to a record 3.2 million per day.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it is asking states to temporarily stop using Johnson & Johnson’s Covid-19 vaccine “with great caution” after six women in the US developed a rare blood clotting disorder.

“Right now, these side effects appear to be extremely rare,” the FDA said in a joint statement with the CDC.

US share of the population is vaccinated

More than 120 million people, or 36% of the US population, have received one or more doses of a Covid vaccine. More than 1 in 5 Americans is fully vaccinated, according to the CDC.

Nearly 80% of people over 65 have received at least one dose and 62% have been fully vaccinated.
