Brooklyn Center shooting, Minnesota: Mayor orders curfew after mob congregates after death of man in shooting involved with officer

The victim was identified as Daunte Wright, according to one tweet from Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

“I’m keeping a close eye on the situation at Brooklyn Center,” Walz wrote. “Gwen and I pray for Daunte Wright’s family as our state mourns the new life of a black man taken away by the police.”

Mayor Mike Elliott, Mayor of Brooklyn Center, ordered a curfew from Monday morning to 6am after declaring a local emergency due to “growing civil unrest,” an emergency proclamation said.

“We want to make sure everyone is safe,” the mayor said in a statement tweet“Please be safe and please go home.”
“The officer shooting at Brooklyn Center today is tragic,” Elliott continued Twitter“We ask the protesters to remain peaceful and that peaceful protesters are not attacked by force.”
The fatal incident comes as the trial of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin in the death of George Floyd enters its third week in a courthouse just 10 miles away. It has been less than 11 months since Floyd was murdered in Minneapolis after Chauvin knelt on his neck. When the video of his death went viral last May, protests erupted in the US.
Aerial photos of CNN subsidiary KARE on Sunday showed that several police cars around the Brooklyn Center crash site were overrun by crowds after the deaths in the afternoon. The connected video showed people trying to damage police cars.

After nightfall, groups of people had gathered around the Brooklyn Center police, CNN crews at the scene reported. Officers lined up outside the ward and with some officers on top of the building.

A representative of the Brooklyn Center Police Department made an announcement above the speaker announcing an illegal meeting, and issued a ten-minute warning to the group to disperse at 9:30 p.m. local time.

Five minutes later, they received a five-minute warning to leave before a loud bang went off and people started running. Part of the crowd continued to follow dispersal orders.

Police say the victim died on the spot

Police said they tried to take the man into custody after finding that he had outstanding warrants during a traffic stop.

The man got back into his vehicle and an officer fired their firearms, according to a statement by police chief Tim Gannon at the Brooklyn Center. He then drove several blocks before hitting another vehicle, police said.

Hennepin County Sheriffs and Brookly Center Police will be standing by a tent on April 11, 2021.

Police and medical personnel tried to take life-saving measures after the crash, but the man died on the spot, Gannon said.

CNN has contacted the office of medical investigators for the official cause of death.

There are camera images of the incident, but they have not yet been released, the authorities said.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) is on the scene and will investigate the incident, according to Gannon.

Brooklyn Center Community Schools announced that schools will be closed Monday and moving to distance learning “out of an abundance of caution following the shooting of the involved officer,” wrote Superintendent Dr. Carly Baker in a post on the school’s website.

“I have not yet fully come to terms with the tragedy that has taken place in our community and I prioritize the safety and wellbeing of our students, families, staff and community members. Tomorrow our staff will be focused on the needs of our students. We know that our community has been through trauma and that we need the time and space to process it. ”
