Miguel Cabrera placed on 10 days IL with biceps strain; Detroit Tigers adds Renato Nunez

The Detroit Tigers placed first baseman Miguel Cabrera on the 10-day injured list on Sunday with a left bicep strain.

Cabrera played in the loss of the Cleveland Indians on Saturday and did not appear to be injured at any point during the game. He was replaced in the ninth inning on Saturday by pinch hitter JaCoby Jones, trailing 11-3 for the Tigers.

Cabrera, 37, is 3-for-24 in seven games with one home run and three RBI’s. The two-time MVP and former Triple Crown winner needs 12 homers to reach 500 for his career.

To replace Cabrera on the roster, the Tigers signed infielder Renato Nunez, who went to Detroit on a minor league deal for spring training, but was transferred to the team’s alternate training venue on March 30.

Nunez spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Orioles and had a career-high 31 homers in 2019. The Tigers created a 40-man roster spot for Nunez by transferring injured pitcher Julio Tehran to the 60-day IL on Sunday.
