In a synopsis, Netflix explains, “ Harp finds solace in rehabilitating horses for downtown cowboys at the Fletcher Street Stables, a true black urban horsemanship community that has been a safe haven for local residents for over 100 years.
Torn between his growing respect for his father’s community and his renewed friendship with troubled cousin Smush (Jharrel Jerome), Cole begins to re-prioritize his life as the stables themselves are threatened by encroaching gentrification. ‘
The film was unveiled at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, where Idris told Variety that the timing was perfect to bring the story of black cowboy culture to the silver screen.
Idris explained, “It feels very appropriate to be able to tell a partial history that has been definitively buried, and in the case of Concrete Cowboy, that history is now.”

He also opened up about the historical value of the material he and director Ricky Staub tried to preserve with the film, referring to the Fletcher Street Stables in light of possible gentrification.
‘Those stables – they’re taken forever and part of what Ricky said to me was,’ I hope we made this movie and they keep the stables, based on people falling in love with the story and history and heritage of the stables. ”
Caleb told the outlet that ‘it was definitely a dream come true to be introduced to the project’ with a cast that also includes Jharrel Jerome, Lorraine Toussaint, Byron Bowers and Method Man.
In particular, the young star was thrilled to find out which actor would play his dad, adding, “Who wouldn’t want Idris to play your dad in a movie?”
