I worked on NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope for eight years.

I’ve never seen anything like it.

Now, I was not a federal employee. Most NASA is not. NASA has a big name, but it’s a small agency and most of them are contractors. The federal employees manage those contractors and the agency’s programs. The Perseverance rover is an example of one such program, as is Hubble and its successor, the soon-to-launch James Webb Space Telescope.

The federal employees are the backbone of the mostly private agency that places rockets and people in space and conducts research into aviation. That’s in the name – National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

There is nothing about managing border children in that name. Nothing. If any of the federal staff had been asked to volunteer at the border while I was at Hubble, all of us contractors would have heard of it.

But here we are. The Biden government irresponsibly threw the border wide open on the first day. Hundreds of thousands of migrants have crossed it illegally. At least 18,000 children are being held in some sort of overcrowded facility. Border towns are overwhelmed. The federal government is so overwhelmed that it is now trying to withdraw its space program personnel, managers and some astronauts and rocket scientists from their important work in one of the smallest federal agencies to deal with this developing border disaster.

The Biden government is swinging. It is now trying to blame Trump, but the migrants are not wearing MAGA hats. They wear “Biden Please Let Us In!” shirts and told each reporter they came because Biden ordered them.

Trump left Biden quite an orderly boundary. The wall that Biden and his parents mocked was nearing completion; Biden inherited shovel-ready infrastructure jobs there, but he immediately canceled them to ban Trump and his supporters. Biden, according to Obama’s quote about his tendency to screw things up, has done just that.

How should I know that? For a few weeks now, Biden has been calling on other, larger agencies to come and help. That was not enough. It was a dud. Who knew that a bunch of government fat cats living in multi-million dollar homes in Bethesda, Maryland and Northern Virginia don’t want to walk to the border where it’s dangerous and they will have to watch out for thousands of children? And also dealing with more COVID by the way. And hyper violent drug cartels that make Blackbeard look like a schoolboy. Shocking that they don’t get enough volunteers, right?

This NASA email seems like an escalation from the staff perspective and from the facility perspective when Biden’s people began considering using a NASA facility to house migrants in March. Wrap your thoughts around that. NASA facilities are not designed for that. They are either designed for rocket research and actual launches, they are designed for building satellites in clean rooms, they are designed for aeronautics or other research, or they are academic and office buildings. Which part of that says, “Let’s pop a bunch of migrant kids here”?

NASA people are not designed for this either. They are program workers and managers and physicists of the highest level and the like. These are very smart people doing great things, but mass childcare in convention centers and tent cities is a long way from ‘other duties as assigned’. Or even volunteer for it, in this case.

They’ve tried to hire babysitters for a whopping $ 144,000 salary, according to Victoria Taft’s report in March. We also have … this. Egad. It’s all doing, Biden. But we got away from those mean tweets. That is something.

Biden is now trying to get NASA people out of their work in space and cutting-edge research – their core mission, and one that’s as important as ever with China on the rise – to deal with the frontier chaos he created out of stupidity and resentment. This is not good. Joe Biden (or whoever makes his decisions for him) is an idiot.
