Apple expects to sell record-breaking 240+ million iPhones by 2021

According to Wedbush analyst Dan Ives, Apple is on track to sell a record 240-250 million iPhones in fiscal year 2021, surpassing the record of 231 million iPhones sold in fiscal 2015.

“While The Street forecasts roughly 220 million iPhone units for FY21, we think based on this current trajectory and in a bull case, Cupertino still has the potential to sell north of 240 million units (~ 250 million would be in the cards – an eye-popping figure) that would easily eclipse Apple’s previous record of 231 million units sold in FY15, ”Ives said in a research note shared with MacRumors today.

Ives estimates that 350 million iPhone users worldwide are currently “in the spotlight of an upgrade opportunity,” which he says “translates into an unprecedented supercycle upgrade cycle” for Apple this year.

If this prediction is true, the iPhone 12 series could prove to be the most popular since the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which saw high demand after launch in September 2014 due to their larger screen sizes. At the time, Samsung already offered several smartphones with screen sizes of more than 5 inches.
