Miami. Yadier Molina flew a tie-breaking sacrifice balloon against Sandy Alcantara, his former drumming partner, and the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Miami Marlins 4-2 on Tuesday night.
Puerto Rican Molina’s fly veil covered a three-run attack in the sixth inning. Dylan Carson hit his second homerun of the season to increase the gap in the ninth inning.
Alcántara was loaned out to Miami by San Luis in December 2017, as part of a package that also included Dominican Marcell Ozuna. Three months earlier, he had made his Major League-debut, with Molina as his catcher.
At the age of 25, Alcantara (0-1) equaled the best of his career, ordering 10 strikeouts in the first five innings. He limited the Cardinals to two hits.
Tommy Edman and Paul Goldschmidt led off the sixth inning by hitting hits within the frame. A walk to Nolan Arenado loaded the bases with no outs.
A passed ball gave St. Louis a run and an RBI-ground by Paul DeJong tied the game 2-2. Molina, who also had two basehits, hit the fly that marked the lead.
The victory went to Ryan Helsey. Alex Reyes came to the rescue.
For the Cardinals, Puerto Rican Molina 3-2 with an RBI.
Stroman shines in Mets’ first win
Philadelphia Marcus Stroman looked sharp for six innings, his first start since 2019, and the New York Mets defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 8-4 on Tuesday-evening.
Dominic Smith and Pete Alonso each added two-run homers for the Mets to take their first win of the season.
Didi Gregorius hit a solo homerun for Philadelphia, which wanted to start the season 5-0, last reached in 1915.
After declining to play last year due to concerns about the corona virus, Stroman (1-0) didn’t seem rusty. He gave up one run and three hits, before leaving the game to a bullpen who ruined a great performance by Jacob deGrom the night before.

Chase Anderson (0-1), the Phillies-starter, gave up two runs and a few hits during five innings. He made his first start with his new team.
Vince Velasquez struckout all three of his opponents in the sixth inning, but walked in the seventh. All four running backs scored and the Mets extended their lead to 6-1.
For the Mets, Puerto Rican Francisco Lindor 4-0 with a run scored. The Dominican Jonathan Villar 1-0. Venezuelan Luis Guillorme 2-0 with one goal scored.
Untouchable Gerrit Cole to Baltimore
New York. Gerrit Cole struckout 13 batters and didn’t walk seven innings, his most dominant start since joining the New York Yankees, who crushed the Baltimore Orioles 7-2 on Tuesday-evening.
Cole (1-0) registered his first win of the season, giving up four hits, three of them singles, in the kind of performance that showed why the Yankees made him the highest paid pitcher in the majors in December 2019 when they gave him a nine-year $ 324 million contract.
Jay Bruce supported Cole’s solid performance with his first homer of the season, no man on base in the second off Dean Kremer (0-1), and Aaron Judge added a three-run homer in the eighth.
