1. Boulder shooting

2. White House

Today, Biden is holding his first formal press conference at the White House since taking office two months ago, and he will face tough questions on issues like gun control and immigration. He is also expected to draw attention to his goal of 100 million doses of coronavirus vaccines given in his first 100 days and passing his $ 1.9 trillion Covid-19 bailout. He can also shed light on his foreign policy positions regarding the country’s troubled relations with Russia and China. Biden has been waiting to hold his first official press conference longer than his 15 most recent predecessors, so reporters – and the American public – are eager to hear from him. The event is scheduled for 1:15 p.m. ET.

3. Coronavirus

Some Democratic lawmakers have asked the president to issue a “waiver of informed consent” to make Covid-19 vaccines mandatory for all US military personnel. Meanwhile, 27 million doses of vaccine will be distributed across the US this week, according to the White House, but advocates for older people fear the government is not doing enough to give vaccines to seniors. As of Tuesday, CDC records show that more than 43% of Americans age 65 and older have been fully vaccinated against Covid-19; that still makes more than half of the elderly vulnerable. In Brazil, it is actually young people who now become seriously ill and die from the virus. Brazil is in the worst days of the pandemic, with hospitals on the verge of collapse and the daily death toll hitting record numbers.

4. Immigration

Biden has tasked Vice President Kamala Harris to oversee diplomatic efforts with Central American countries to stop the flow of migrants to the US southern border. And with a large number of unaccompanied minors in US custody, some former Border Patrol chiefs are begging Congressional leaders to increase resources and take steps to reform the US immigration system. Not only is the Biden government under increasing pressure to resolve the crisis, it is also called upon not to allow journalists access to facilities for migrant children. Lawmakers paid a visit to one such facility in Texas yesterday – with a news camera finally in tow.

5. Suez Canal

A container ship grounded in the Suez Canal on Tuesday, blocking one of the world’s busiest waterways and stranding dozens of ships on both sides in one of the worst shipping congestion in years. And … it is still there. In fact, a salvage company’s CEO says it could take days or weeks to free the massive tanker from the relatively small waterway. The 224,000-ton ship is nearly as tall as the Empire State Building is and was trapped by a sandstorm and poor navigation. Shipping experts say if not released soon, some ships may need to be diverted around the southernmost tip of Africa, adding about a week of extra voyages. How important is this narrow waterway really? About 30% of the global shipping container volume travels through its 120 miles every day. Well, most days. Not today.
