PEORIA, Ariz. – Fernando Tatis Jr. left the Padres’ Cactus League game against the Reds in the third inning on Tuesday with left shoulder discomfort after a tough defense.
Tatis, whose injury is on his non-throwing shoulder, is expected to be re-evaluated on Wednesday.
The Padres’ short stop reached to the right, then made a long pitch over the window to eliminate Reds second baseman Jonathan India. Tatis was immediately removed and walked off the field after being assessed by manager Jayce Tingler and a team trainer.
After retiring to the coach’s room for half an inning, Tatis left Peoria Stadium accompanied by a member of the team’s medical staff.
Obviously, the Padres cannot afford to be without Tatis, who signed a record 14-year extension last month. He’s raked all spring, with a 1,092 OPS in 11 games.
Tatis missed five games with a non-COVID-related illness earlier this month. Then he missed a few more days after a hard blow to home plate left him a bit stuck, though the team never revealed a specific injury. It’s unclear whether Tuesday’s condition was related.
