Ilhan Omar: The media is missing the point about the border crisis

“I think there are some failures going on,” the Minnesota congressman told CNN’s Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter on “Reliable Sources” Sunday. “And it’s really important for us to show basic humanity and address the causes of migration in the region.”

According to documents obtained by CNN, more than 5,000 unaccompanied children were detained by US Customs and Border Guards on Saturday. This news comes as President Joe Biden’s administration tries to come up with quick solutions to address the evolving immigration situation.
The media has largely focused on the number of unaccompanied children at the border. But Omar is urging the media to address the root causes of the immigration crisis and focus on “cruel and contradictory” foreign policy.

The talks on immigration are currently about “getting political marks,” Omar said.

“It’s not about Americans’ safety,” she added.

Republicans are stepping up their attacks on Democrats because of the ongoing crisis on the border. Last week, they introduced a new ad campaign accusing Biden of opening the border instead of focusing on opening schools and businesses.

Omar took a position of her own week, writing a letter to Biden’s Director of Internal Policy, Susan Rice and Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, and urging Biden’s government to issue an Executive Order. in which she announced a plan to phase out contracts between ICE and the state. , county and local prisons and prisons.

On Sunday, Mayorkas declined to provide a timeline for when the Biden government will open new facilities to accommodate the flow of unaccompanied children on the southern border.
