Steve Wojciechowski shot with Marquette Golden Eagles after seven seasons

Head coach Steve Wojciechowski is out with Marquette after seven seasons, the school announced on Friday.

The Golden Eagles finished 13-14 overall and 8-11 in Big East last season.

“After an in-depth review of our program over the past week, including multiple interviews with Steve, I concluded that now is the right time for a new leader of our legendary program,” said Marquette athletic director Bill Scholl. “I am convinced that our history of success and our dedication to developing young men who are leaders on the field and beyond will attract the highest caliber of coaching talent. I would like to thank Steve for his dedication to our student athletes, and for how He represented our men’s basketball program and the university. We wish Steve, Lindsay, Jack and Charlie nothing but the best for the future. “

Wojciechowski went to two NCAA tournaments in his seven seasons with the Golden Eagles, losing in the first round each time. Last season, they were said to have made a third NCAA tournament appearance behind Markus Howard’s stellar play, but the event was canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This season, Marquette had remarkable victories over Wisconsin and Creighton in December, but was unable to build it the rest of the way. A run of six defeats in seven games mid-Big East game ended the Golden Eagles’ hopes for NCAA, despite winning four out of five to end the season.

In seven seasons, Wojciechowski went 128-95 overall and 59-68 in league games.

The school said Friday it will immediately begin a national search for a replacement.
