LONDON – Samsung debuted three mid-range smartphones on Wednesday, hoping to lure those with less money to spare as competition from Apple intensifies.
The new phones are part of Samsung’s budget Galaxy A range, which has become a popular brand with Samsung customers, put off by high prices in the company’s flagship Galaxy S series.
Samsung is aiming to regain its position as the world’s top smartphone manufacturer after Apple captured that title in the fourth quarter of 2020. Apple’s new iPhone 12 is the company’s first model to come with 5G capabilities.
Samsung is launching three new models: the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G and Galaxy A72. The new line-up is an upgrade from last year’s Galaxy A51 and A71 handsets. The A52 5G is the only device of the three that supports super-fast 5G internet.
Specifications and features
The South Korean electronics giant says its new phones have seen a number of improvements over their predecessors, including a better screen, better camera and better battery life.
The Galaxy A52 has a bright 6.5-inch screen while the Galaxy A72 has a 6.7-inch screen. The Galaxy A52 5G has a refresh rate of 120 Hz, which basically means you can scroll more smoothly. The entry-level Galaxy A52 and more expensive A72 models have a refresh rate of 90Hz.
Samsung says it takes eye strain into account, including a feature that automatically adjusts the screen’s color temperature to the way someone uses their phone. There is also a music sharing setting that allows users to sync their phone with a friend’s device to connect to a Bluetooth speaker without having to connect directly to the speaker.
All three phones include a quad camera with a 64 megapixel main lens. The Galaxy A72 features 3x optical zoom, which Samsung says allows users to take a photo from a distance of 10 meters that looks like it was taken only three meters away.
Another important camera feature in the new Galaxy A series is Fun Mode, which has been developed in collaboration with Snap. It is a tool in Samsung’s own camera app that allows you to add Snapchat filters to your photos and videos.
Samsung also praised better battery life with its new handsets, promising two days of use without having to worry about charging the phones. The A52 and A52 5G come with a 4,500mAH battery, while the A72 has a larger 5,000mAH battery.
Price and release date
Samsung’s Galaxy A52 costs 349 euros ($ 415), while the A52 5G and A72 cost 429 euros and 449 euros respectively.
Samsung has not yet given an international release date for the new phones, but said they will be released in the US sometime in April.
“This new lineup represents an important step in performance and features,” said Paolo Pescatore, tech, media and telco analyst at PP Foresight.
“The most striking features are the impressive display, including the high refresh rate and the much longer battery life.”
Samsung’s new budget phones can entice people who aren’t willing to pay $ 1,000 or more for a premium Android or iPhone model.
“The launch is timely and interesting given the many new smartphone launches,” said Pescatore.
“While there is tremendous excitement with the arrival of new smartphones, competition in the mid-range segment is intense. Samsung has done well to pack premium sought after features (some of its flagship S21 device) at competitive prices.
