According to the Ministry of Health, Brazil reported 2,841 fatalities related to the coronavirus, the highest daily death toll since the start of the pandemic.

The total death toll from Covid-19 now stands at 282,127.

In addition, 83,926 new Covid-19 cases were reported on Tuesday, bringing the total caseload to 11,603,535.

On Monday, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro announced the appointment of cardiologist Marcelo Queiroga as the country’s fourth health minister since the pandemic last March. Queiroga will replace the current Minister, Army General Eduardo Pazuello, who has headed the Ministry of Health since May 16, 2020.

The transition at the Ministry of Health will take place in a few weeks, according to Bolsonaro.

Meanwhile, governors of the most affected regions in the country announced the approval of night clock and stricter measures to curb the spread of the virus.

Fourteen of the twenty-six Brazilian states, plus the Federal District, have curfews – usually between 8pm and 5am – the majority of them enforced over the past week.

In addition, 18 state governments have announced more restrictive measures in the past five days.
