While since its launch, EA has issued more than 25,000 warnings, suspensions and banned more than 9,000 accounts for “inappropriate or offensive content” FIFA 21 Last year, you may be shocked to learn that the game still has an issue with racist white folks using certain systems and game modes to act like assholes.
Like this Eurogamer research reveals, while much of our (and presumably EA’s) focus is mainly on regular multiplayer FIFAs The flagship Ultimate Team, the lower profile Pro Clubs mode, is “full of racism” for over a decade.
Some examples are:
Racist players, using the “banter defense”, have abused the comment system to, for example, put their player’s comment name on “banana” to nickname black players with the term. Some players also changed the name of their player commentary to “Negro” (with soccer players whose last name is Negro) or “Khune” (with comments from Itumeleng Khune, the South African goalkeeper for Kaizer Chiefs FC), to offend. Players have also reported encountering racist caricatures through custom player faces.
Part of the problem here is that the Pro Clubs mode, which allows users to create a player and / or team and participate in 11v11 online games, doesn’t make the reporting systems clear to players.
In response to Eurogamer’s reportEA says “more intelligent monitoring and mitigation technology” will be released in the coming months, but how effective that will be against some of the tactics mentioned above has yet to be proven.
