The New York Yankees reported Wednesday that manager Aaron Boone has taken a medical leave of absence to have a pacemaker installed at a Tampa hospital near the American League club’s spring training headquarters.
Boone, who turns 48 next week, is preparing for his fourth season as a Yankees manager. He played in the major leagues for 12 years, mainly with the Cincinnati Reds, and one season with New York.
“As many of you know, I had open heart surgery in 2009 and I wanted everyone to understand where I stand with regard to the procedure that is taking place today,” Boone said in a press release.
“For the past six to eight weeks, I have had mild symptoms of dizziness, lack of energy and shortness of breath. As a result, I underwent a series of tests and examinations in New York before the start of spring training, including several visits with a team of heart specialists, ”Boone said.
“As heart control returned to normal, there was evidence of a low heart rate that, after further consultation with doctors in Tampa, requires a pacemaker,” he added.
“My faith is strong and my mood is bright. I am cheerful knowing that I am in good hands with the doctors and medical staff here at St. Joseph’s Hospital. The doctors trust that today’s surgery will enable me will allow me to resume all my usual professional and personal activities and give me a positive long-term health outlook without changing my way of life, ”said Boone.
Boone is part of a large baseball family. His brother Brett, his father Bob and his grandfather Ray also played in the big leagues.
