There was not a personal Comic-Con in 2020, nor will there be in 2021 after the show’s organizers announced a decision to “delay” it until 2022.
That’s … a strange use of the word considering that the Comic-Con in 2022 would just be the 2022 Comic-Con, but there may be some legal bickering in the exact language used in terms of insurance, etc.
These are the main parts of the organizer’s statement:
It is the organization’s policy to continue to closely monitor information from local and state health officials regarding the COVID-19 pandemic. We could never have imagined what the world went through in 2020 and is still experiencing it. While we are buoyed by the introduction of the vaccine and the growing number of individuals being vaccinated, it seems that July will still be too early to safely hold a personal event the size of Comic-Con. For this reason, we’ve made the challenging decision to postpone Comic-Con 2021 as a face-to-face meeting until our 2022 dates.
Instead of an in-person event, there will be a Comic-Con @ Home event around the same time. And in more promising news, while the head Comic-Con has been pushed into 2022, there is room for a smaller show in between as a kind of test run:
… we believe launching a smaller in-person event at a later date can be a safe alternative. For this reason, we are pleased to announce that the San Diego Comic Convention plans to present a three-day in-person convention in San Diego in November.
