Fans of Nickelodeon’s “iCarly” can count the series co-star Jennette McCurdy, who has almost confirmed that she will not be reprising her role as Sam Puckett in the upcoming sequel season.
McCurdy, 28, confessed on a recent episode of a podcast called “Empty Inside” that she is “ashamed” of her past acting career.
“My acting experience is that I am so ashamed of the roles I’ve played in the past,” she said. “I hate my career in many ways. I feel so unfulfilled by the roles I played and felt like it was the cheapest, embarrassing one. “
In addition to McCurdy, ‘iCarly’ also stars Miranda Cosgrove (Carly Shay) and aired on Nickelodeon from 2007 to 2012. Her character was later spun off on the Nick series ‘Sam & Cat’, marking the career of pop star Ariana Grande (aka Cat Valentine).
“I did the shows I was on from 13 to 21, and by 15 I was already embarrassed,” McCurdy recalls. “My friends of 15, they don’t say, ‘Oh, cool, you’re on this Nickelodeon show.’ It was embarrassing. And I imagine there is a very different experience with acting when you are proud of your roles and when you feel fulfilled by them. ”
Speaking to Anna Faris, a guest on Empty Inside, McCurdy said she would eventually quit acting and start writing and directing more. “It is going great. I quit a few years ago because I didn’t want to do it at first, ”she admitted.
“My family didn’t have much money,” said McCurdy, whose mother encouraged her to start acting at the age of 6. . “
The young actor said that “always, always, always acting was hard for me,” adding that her nerves often got the better of me.
“Once I started to get the nerves under control, I really started to get some grip, but I eventually quit after my mom died because with her death a lot of her ideas died for my life, and that was his own journey, and certainly a difficult one, ”she explained.
She also entrusted one of her most painful acting memories – when she was passed around the age of 13 for a role in the 2005 movie “Because of Winn-Dixie”, because casting agents thought she was too “homey” for the role.
When Faris asked if she would ever act again, McCurdy confirmed that she had given up acting after debuting her highly personal solo live show “I’m Glad My Mom Died” in February 2020.
“I wrote this one-woman show, and I did, and I really didn’t want to because of the nerves. Because I feel like I don’t want to act anymore, ‘she said.
But she wouldn’t say “never,” offering that the right director might be able to lure her back on set.
“I feel like I have a point of view, and I have a vision. In a few years, we’ll see where things are, ”said McCurdy.
