YANQUIS 5, TIGERS 4 (7)
GOODYEAR, Ariz. – New York catcher Gary Sanchez, a two-time All-Star who batted .147 last year, hit a long homerun over midfield. The Yankees-starter gave up one run and three basehits in one inning.
Wilson Ramos homered for Detroit.
BIEBER GETS PUNISHED
Shane Bieber was defeated in his last appearance last season. The first in 2021 was nothing better.
The AL Cy Young gave up four runs and missed the two scheduled innings, and the Cleveland Indians suffered an 8-6 loss on Monday against the Kansas City Royals in Goodyear, Arizona.
While he couldn’t get excited about his performance, Bieber wasn’t disappointed either. He was able to test certain releases and work on things he wants to improve.
“I get some positives in terms of how I want to throw the slider,” he said.
Bieber led the majors in wins, ERA and strikeouts last year, an unusual triple crown during the pandemic. He became the fifth Cleveland-pitcher to win a Cy Young since 2007.
The right wing dominated until the playoffs came. The New York Yankees rocked him seven runs in 4 2/3 innings of the first game of the wildcard series. The next day the Indians were taken away.
His arrival at the spring camp was delayed after he tested positive for COVID-19. The 25-year-old pitcher said last week that he was feeling good and was ready to build after his third season in the majors and put the “bitterness” over his post-season fiasco behind him.
ASTROS 7, NATIONAL 6
Ryan Zimmerman played a game for the first time in nearly a year – he decided not to play in 2020 due to the pandemic – and hit one of Washington’s three consecutive homeruns off righthanded Steve Cishek from Houston in the third inning.
Zimmerman, the 36-year old two-time All-Star, will be Josh Bell’s backup at first base this season.
DODGERS 10, ROCKIES 0 (6 INNINGS)
Trevor Bauer, who pitched for the first time after signing a $ 102 million three-year contract, made his debut with Dodgers Blue with two outs. He gave up one basehit, struckout two, walked and had a wild pitch.
Bauer won the NL Cy Young with Cincinnati last year.
Colorado-starter Dereck Rodriguez gave up two runs in two innings.
ANGELINOS 4, WHITE Stockings 4 (5)
Albert Pujols led the Angels’ attack by going 2-2 with two RBI’s.
BRAVOS 5, RED STOCKINGS 3 (7 INNINGS)
Braves rookie catcher William Contreras, the brother of Cubs catcher Willson Contreras, drove three runs in the Atlanta victory.
MARLINS 2, METS 0 (7)
Sandy Alcantara and four Miami relievers pitched a five-hitter together. Venezuelan Jesús Aguilar hit a two-run homer.
Francisco Lindor went 2-0 in New York’s spring debut.
