257 more COVID-19 cases, 5 deaths reported in Utah Monday

SALT LAKE CITY – According to the Utah Department of Health, COVID-19 cases in Utah are up 257 on Monday, with another five dead.

The state now estimates that there are 16,738 active cases of the disease in Utah. Monday, there were 4,493 more vaccinations, the health department reported.

The moving seven-day average number of positive cases per day now stands at 636, according to the health department. The positive test rate per day for that period reported with the “people over people” method is now 11%. The positive test rate per day over seven days calculated with the “test over test” method is now 5.1%.

There are currently 214 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Utah, including 89 in intensive care units, state data shows. About 66% of all intensive care beds in Utah are now occupied, including about 68% of the state’s 16 referral hospitals. About 47% of all non-IC hospital beds in the state are occupied.

A total of 721,029 vaccines have been administered in the state, up from 716,536 on Sunday. Of these, 256,554 are second doses of the vaccine.

The new numbers indicate an increase of 0.07% in positive cases since Sunday. Of the 2,208,924 people tested for COVID-19 so far in Utah, 16.8% tested positive for COVID-19. The total number of tests conducted since the start of the pandemic is now 3,813,782, up from 6,517 since Sunday, state data show. Of those, 3,133 were tests from people who had not previously been tested for COVID-19.

The five deaths reported Monday include:

  • An Iron County man aged between 65 and 84 who was hospitalized when he died
  • A man from Kane County who was between the ages of 65 and 84 and was hospitalized when he died
  • Two men from Salt Lake County who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were hospitalized when they died
  • A Salt Lake County man between the ages of 45 and 64 who was hospitalized when he died

Monday’s totals give Utah a total of 371,492 confirmed cases, with 14,724 total hospitalizations and 1,940 total deaths from the disease. According to the health department, a total of 352,814 Utah COVID-19 cases are now considered recovered.

The Utah government, Spencer Cox, is scheduled to release its weekly pandemic update Thursday at 11 a.m., according to his office.
