Mr. Potato Head is the latest weapon in Fox News’ culture wars

“The conversations about Mr. Potato Head and trans kids or whatever the story of the culture war is very distracting,” author and CNN columnist Jill Filipovic told CNN’s Chief Media Correspondent Brian Stelter on “Reliable Sources” on Sunday.
Hasbro threw it out on Thursday when news of a brand change from Mr. Potato Head came forward. The toy company later tweeted about it, and assured fans that although the brand name changes, Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head’s characters are “not going anywhere.”
On Saturday, Fox News presenter Greg Gutfeld said that Mr. Potato Head was “neutered” and Sean Hannity invited Geraldo Rivera and Dan Bongino to the airwaves to discuss the “controversy and confusion” caused by Hasbro’s decision to rename the toy.

“Something is wrong if the so-called cancellation culture gets more attention than the struggles that millions of Americans are facing,” Stelter said.

When Republicans focus on topics like Mr. Potato Head, The Muppets and Culture, they are tackling what they believe are leftist attacks on traditional families and traditional family structure, Filipovic noted. The Republican Party has no legislative solutions to those ‘non-problems’ and, frankly, does not want them. It is Democrats and progressives who propose actual legislative solutions that would help solve the problems that families – traditionally or not – face in the US are facing. “

And CPAC ties in closely with Fox News as the topics discussed often reflect what the network prefers to highlight. “CPAC is actually a live recording of Fox,” said Stelter. In a CPAC speech Friday Rep. Matt Gaetz was referring to Mr. Potato Head as “America’s First Transgender Pop”.
