The recent photos feature side-by-side images of Hill dressed shirtless and another in his surf suit.
“I don’t think I ever took my shirt off in a pool until my mid-30s, even in front of family and friends,” Hill said on Instagram. “It probably would have happened sooner if my childhood insecurities had not been exacerbated by years of public derision of my body by the press and interviewers.”
He then clarified that these types of images are no longer phasing him as he has learned to be confident and self-acceptable about his appearance.
I am 37 and finally love and accept myself. This is not a “good for me” post. And it is certainly not a “feel bad for me” post, the actor continued.
“It’s for the kids who don’t take their shirts off by the pool. Have fun.
Post is garnering celebrity support
Hill’s Instagram post sparked supportive comments from fans and other celebrities who not only applauded him for his honesty, but also shared some of their own struggles with body image.
“When I take off my shirt on the beach, it looks like I’m still wearing a shirt … or a sweater. Now I’m proud to show it off!” said film director Judd Apatow.
“You probably won’t read this comment, but a nice man feels great to be great and I’m happy to know that someone I looked up to struggled with what I was going through and came out on top. Keep winning”, said a fan.
And finally, Justin Timberlake added another support message. “You’re a G !!! And my spirit animal! I love you bro!”
Hill concluded his post by saying, “Oh and Daily Mail, even you can’t take that smile off my face;).”
