Has it really been 45 years since the quintessentially hot hatchback first graced the car scene? Indeed, and to honor the occasion, Volkswagen is presenting a special edition 2021 Golf GTI called the Clubsport 45.
This probably comes as no surprise, given that images of the pocket rocket were only leaked a few days ago. Now we have full disclosure from VW about all the details, and as the name suggests, this new version is based on the hotter GTI Clubsport. That means that a 296 hp (221 kilowatt) version of the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder is located under the hood and powers the front wheels exclusively via a seven-speed DCT. It also has the trick differential for the front axle and the improved Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which helps take the Clubsport to 100 km / h in less than six seconds.

As for the special Clubsport 45, it is primarily an upgrade to the appearance of the Clubsport. We say primary because VW does add an exclusive Race package, including a sports exhaust system. Clubsport’s 155 mph speed limiter has also been removed, although VW doesn’t say how fast the 45 will go. The Race package also includes special 19-inch Scottsdale wheels, finished in gloss black with red lip trim.
The exterior naturally carries the GTI Clubsport skin. Improvements in Clubsport 45 include a black roof and rear spoiler which VW says pays homage to the black-framed rear window of the original 1976 GTI. Prominent stripes with 45 decorations can be found on the sills, with 45 also added to the tailgate. Up front you will find IQ.Light LED matrix headlights; As you move in, you’ll find a classic GTI badge with GTI lettering on the front seat backs. Another copy of 45 appears on the bottom of the handlebar.
Pre-sale for the Clubsport 45 will start from March 1 in selected European countries. Prices start at $ 47,790, but if you’re wondering how much that is in US currency, don’t bother. The Clubsport is showing no signs of reaching the US shores, a VW spokesman said Motor1.com that there are no plans to send the Clubsport 45 across the pond.
