A huge 242-carat diamond will go to the auction block in Dubai next month. Bidding starts at over $ 2 million.
Russian state-controlled diamond producer Alrosa, the world’s largest producer of rough diamonds, is offering the jewel at its 100th international auction in Dubai on March 22.
The crystal-clear diamond in the rough is about the size of a small egg, making it one of the largest stones that Alrosa has mined this century, the company said.
“Rough diamonds, which make it possible to cut a cut diamond larger than 100 carats, are extremely rare in nature. Such gems are offered even less often, ”said Evgeny Agureev, Alrosa’s head of sales, in a statement.
The diamond was mined more than a decade ago, but under Russian law, diamonds larger than 50 carats must first be presented to the country’s state warehouse.
The auction comes months after an “incredibly rare” 14.8 carat purple-pink Russian stone was put up for auction for over $ 26 million.
Large diamonds mined in Asia were still found to be in size for jewelry excavated in Africa.
The largest diamond in the world – a 3,106-carat Cullinan – was found in South Africa in 1905.
