Leaked 2021 Apple iMac Redesign Is Astonishing (But A Little Predictable)

If there’s one Apple product that needs a fresh coat of paint, it’s the iMac. The all-in-one desktop machine, last redesigned centuries ago (in 2012), currently has one of Apple’s oldest product designs. But a wild new leak has revealed that the iMac could receive a very colorful upgrade in 2021.

Not only will the 2021 iMac reportedly have an all-new design, but it will also reportedly come in five brand new shades. And judging by new 3D renderings of the lineup (below), our best graphic design computer is about to come out a lot of more lively.

According to everyone’s favorite Apple leaker, Jon Prosser, the iMac will be available in black, white, green, blue and rose gold for 2021. Recent rumors have suggested that the new iMac will have thinner bezels and a thinner chassis (similar to Apple’s Pro Display XDR), and Prosser’s renderings show a straighter and narrower profile.

So those colors. The most obvious thing to note about the pastel shades is that they were lifted straight from the 2020 iPad Air. The move suggests Apple is considering consolidating the color schemes of its products (although if this is the case, it’s odd that the company hasn’t chosen to release the iPhone 12 in the same muted tones).

But as many fans have noted, colorful iMacs can also serve as a nostalgic throwback to the very first iMac. When Apple’s aesthetic was way more fun than the metallic silver-gray party it is today (the Apple logo was rainbow, remember), it released machines in all kinds of charming colors. Looking at these 2021 iMac renderings, we can’t help but think of the 1998 iMac G3 (below).

And judging by the response on Twitter (below), it looks like fans are ready to see Apple some color back in the iMac lineup. Indeed, with some corners of the internet getting tired of minimal graphic design, could sentiment spread to product design as well?
