Marcus Mariota, the Raiders quarterback, has been the subject of trade talk this month, but a deal may not be as likely as it was a few weeks ago.

NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport reports that talks between the Raiders and other teams “crossed the line a bit,” but cooled down considerably in the past few days. Mariota’s contract seems to be the sticking point.

He will earn a base salary of $ 10,625 million with a maximum of $ 11.35 million, but contract incentives would more than double his compensation if he is a starter for the entire 2021 season.

That basic salary without the incentives is probably not a big problem for a team that sees Mariota as a starter. It will make it difficult for the Raiders to hold onto Mariota as a backup for Derek Carr and the prospect of Mariota’s release could also be a factor in teams pulling out of a potential transaction for the second overall pick of the 2015 draft .
