The South African corruption investigation wants Zuma to be jailed for two years after a no-show

In a petition to the constitutional court seen by Reuters, the “ state capture ” investigation focuses on an injunction that Zuma is guilty of contempt from court for failing to appear or making affidavits last week when asked .

The investigation investigates allegations of high-level transplant during Zuma’s period in power from 2009 to 2018.

Zuma has denied wrongdoing and did not cooperate with the investigation.

His no-show last week came despite the investigation calling him to appear and the constitutional court ordered him to comply with that subpoena and give testimony.

Zuma’s lawyer Eric Mabuza was unreachable when he was called by Reuters to ask for comment.

The allegations against Zuma include allowing businessmen close to him – the brothers Atul, Ajay and Rajesh Gupta – to loot state resources and influence policy.

The Guptas, who also deny wrongdoing, left South Africa after Zuma was ousted in a move orchestrated by allies of his successor Cyril Ramaphosa.

Ramaphosa has sought to restore investor confidence in Africa’s most industrialized nation. However, he has faced opposition from a faction within the ruling African National Congress party that is still loyal to Zuma.
