HP buys gaming peripheral manufacturer HyperX for $ 425 million

HyperX, the well-known maker of gaming headsets, keyboards and other peripherals, is sold by HP Inc. acquired in a $ 425 million deal, HP announced Wednesday.

HyperX is the gaming division of Kingston Technology Company; HP is acquiring that division from Kingston, not the entire company. Kingston will continue to make DRAM, flash and SSD peripherals for the enthusiast market, according to a statement from HP.

HP said HyperX will bolster the company’s portfolio of gaming products, which has grown in recent years. The company has been trying to crack a lineup made up of more established brands such as Corsair, Logitech and Razer, with HP offering its line of Omen mice, headsets, monitors, and other hardware.

“We see significant opportunities in the large and growing peripheral market,” said Enrique Lores, HP’s president and chief executive in a statement, “and the addition of HyperX to our portfolio will drive new sources of innovation and growth for our business.”

For existing HyperX owners, The Verge reports that the Ngenuity companion app they are using continues as normal and does not collapse in the Omen Control Center that supports HP’s hardware.
