Drew Barrymore shares her ’empathy’ for Britney Spears, talks about her own time in a mental ward

Drew Barrymore speaks out in support of Britney Spears and Paris Hilton as new attention is paid to how the former party girls were treated in their youth.

Barrymore has been in the public eye since she was a child and is currently hosting her own talk show. During a recent appearance on Howard Stern’s show, the star discussed her own wild days that led to a stay in a psychiatric ward when she was 13 years old.

The host compared her situation to Spears’s, which led the host to comment that she has “so much empathy” for people in her position.

“Paris Hilton came on this show and she was institutionalized by her mom and, you know, you think like Britney and Paris and I came up with it myself, I’m sure people are watching and thinking, ‘These party girls, these privileges, how Do they dare to have feelings about this? They put themselves out there, they asked for this – it’s fair game, “and I just say,” It’s people. It’s just people, “and I have a lot of empathy,” explained the star.

Stern previously shared his support for Spears as the public continues to discuss the pop star’s life and treatment in public following the release of the “Framing Britney Spears” documentary and her conservatorship battle with her father, Jamie Spears. Hilton, meanwhile, made headlines earlier this year when she talked about her experience at an abusive boarding school she attended when she was young.

Barrymore also brought up her time in a psychiatric ward after her mother was desperate for help raising her when she was 13.

“My mom put me in a place that looked like a full psychiatric ward. I laughed about it, like Malibu 30-day places. They talked about things that screw up me. I was like … A little 30-day spa vacation days in Malibu was more or less the opposite of the experience I had, “she explained.” I was in a place called Van Nuys Psychiatric for a year and a half and you couldn’t mess around. If you did, you would either be in thrown into the padded room or strapped into stretchers and tied up. “

Barrymore said her time stuck in that place was marked by constant rebellion, taking charge of punk rockers like Wendy O. Williams of the Plasmatics, whom she idolized.

“I would channel my inner riot girl,” she said, noting that along with her peers, she would start mini-revolutions against the staff.

“It was like half a daycare and half an elderly person’s house, so while I was getting these young girls up and running, the woman in the walker passed by. It was hilarious,” she added.

Although she blamed her mother for putting her there at the time, as an adult and mother of two herself, she understands why her mother was at the end of her rope and admitted that she was “out of control.”

“I think she made a monster and she didn’t know what to do with the monster,” admitted the star. This was her last gasp, and I was really out of control, and I forgive her for making this choice. She probably felt she had nowhere to go. ”

Stern asked her if she has a good relationship with her mother today, to which the star noted that they communicate all the time.

“I’m really happy that healing is taking place there,” she concluded.
