“Bachelor” fans enjoyed the scary hard landing of controversial contestant Rachael Kirkconell on a skydiving date with Matt James.
On Monday’s episode, the duo went skydiving on a date while tied to individual professionals. After Matt makes his landing, his date comes in a little quickly and hits his face to the ground. Although she was a little confused, despite the hard fall back to Earth, she suffered no serious injuries. However, the terrifying moment was a minor boon to Kirkconnell, as it made the bachelor realize he had an affection for her.
However, after a controversy in which photos of Kirkconnell resurfaced showing her attending an “Old South” theme in 2018, was accused of racism, some viewers weren’t sad to see her hurt. The 24-year-old previously issued a long mea culpa on social media for her “ignorance,” but viewers still found the face plant to be a bit of ordinary dessert for the contestant.

The resurfaced photos ultimately had a much greater impact on the “Bachelor” franchise than just Kirkconnell and James. During an interview with former “Bachelorette” star Rachel Lindsay with Chris Harrison for Extra, Harrison defended Kirkconnell for attending the party, saying the 2018 photos only look bad through a 2020 lens. The ensuing backlash forced Harrison to both apologize and reveal that he would “step aside” as the show’s host to take time for personal reflection.
Although James fell for Kirkconnell even more because of the power landing, he spoke out about the social media controversy during the episode.
In his lengthy statement, James – who is the bachelor’s first black lead actor – said that “the past few weeks have been some of the most challenging of my life” and that he felt the need to address the issue now, despite his season. with several episodes yet to be aired.
