(CNN Español) – The wife of convicted drug trafficker Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán Loera was arrested in the United States on Monday on charges related to her alleged involvement in international drug trafficking, the Justice Department announced.
Emma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was arrested at Dulles International Airport in Virginia for conspiring to distribute one kilogram or more heroin, five kilograms or more cocaine, 1,000 kilograms or more of marijuana, and 500 grams or more of methamphetamine for import. the country, according to a statement from the Ministry of Justice.
He is expected to appear in a video conference for the first time in Washington on Tuesday.
Prosecutors also said Coronel Aispuro conspired with others to aid her husband in his escape from a prison in Mexico on July 11, 2015. Guzmán Loera was found guilty after a 2019 jury trial and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years of federal prison .
Jeffrey Lichtman and Mariel Colon told CNN they represent Coronel Aispuro.
Colon said they are trying to understand the full scope of the government’s allegations and hope to have a better idea by Tuesday.
