The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 90 additional coronavirus-related deaths on Monday.

On Friday, RIDOH had reported 2,376 deaths since the start of the pandemic – by Monday that number was 2,466.

The three-day adjustment represented a 4% increase in the total number of deaths in the past 11 months. The agency claims that only 9 of the deaths occurred over the weekend.

The beleaguered agency claims there was no deliberate under-reporting, but that this was routine – even if it is the biggest correction yet.

RIDOH on an increase of 4%

“In the past three days, our total number of deaths was 5, 1 and 3. However, the total number of confirmed fatalities since the start of the pandemic has risen by more,” said RIDOH spokesman Joseph Wendelken.

According to RIDOH, “Our death records are considered preliminary for at least three months and are often revised upwards. This is because it takes time for the causes of death to be confirmed and we need to compare our different data sets. We routinely do assessments to compare our case data and our overall mortality data to ensure that all COVID-19 fatalities are recorded. “

“This often leads us to identify COVID-19 fatalities that were not initially reported to RIDOH as COVID-19 fatalities. We did one of these routine assessments, therefore there was a greater than normal increase in the current cumulative total of COVID-19 fatalities, ”she added.

“We still have a significant death rate and there is just too much infection and transmission in Rhode Island,” said Dr. Michael Fine, former Rhode Island Health Director.

65+ Vaccination registration suffered from technical difficulties

Earlier on Monday, RIDOH admitted that enrollment for over-65s planning vaccinations got off to a late start after technical issues.
