The relationship between Pence and Trump is ‘friendly’, the source says

The source would not provide CNN with any further details about the relationship, or describe the content of the calls. Each of them initiated one call.

CNN previously reported that Trump will speak at the Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida on Sunday, according to a source familiar with the case, while Pence declined an invitation to speak at the conference, two sources said. The expert source said Monday that the reason Pence is not attending CPAC is that “it is tradition for the outgoing president and vice president to remain silent, and the new president deserves that courtesy.”
The difference in approach taken by the two former leaders comes as the GOP grapples with its future in the post-Trump era and tensions ensue between Trump and Pence over the January 6 riot at the Capitol and the former vice president’s role in certifying the results of the election for President Joe Biden.

The source also noted that the former vice president is close to Arizona governor Doug Ducey, now head of the Republican Governor’s Association. By the summer, the source said, Pence will be more active in politics, likely in the governmental cycle, and has told House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy that he will also be active.

As for the actions of the former CPAC president and beyond, the source said, “People don’t want to risk (Trump’s) anger, but no one really knows how it will turn out.”

The problem, the source said, is that the ex-president won’t have a strong political team around him. “A lot of people are circling in and out,” including those who will meet him in Florida before the conference, such as Jason Miller, Bill Stepien, Justin Clark and Brad Parscale.

“They will want to continue to spread the story that he is the kingmaker,” added the source.
