(CNN Español) – Mariachi mi México offered a serenade to the home of Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz this Sunday, who has been severely criticized after traveling to Cancun with his family while the state he represents is in distress following the passage of a winter storm.
José Antonio Solís, leader of the mariachi band, told CNN they managed to sing for an hour, despite members of Cruz’s security team and the Houston police approaching to try and protest the people who had gathered. instead to disperse.
The mariachi group was hired by Bryan Hlavinka, a Houston resident. CNN tried to contact Hlavinka to find out the motivation behind the hiring, but got no response.
Solís is originally from the state of Guerrero in Mexico. He has lived in Houston for 30 years and says he hosted mariachi six years ago. Other members of the mariachi are originally from the states of Michoacán and Zacatecas.
Solís says he and his colleagues feel blessed to be able to work because they were unable to do so last week due to the winter storm. “Several colleagues have been affected and almost all of them had damage to their homes and we were unable to work,” he added.
