Both officers were taken to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Michigan City, where police said one officer was pronounced dead on arrival. The second officer was in serious condition, police said.

On Monday, the LaPorte County Coroner’s office identified the officer who had been fatally stabbed as 57-year-old Lt. Gene Lasco. Other details were not readily available.

An autopsy was scheduled for Wednesday morning.

Tymetri Campbell, 38, who is an inmate at Indiana State Prison, is facing several charges, including murder pending an investigation, police said. Other details were not readily available.

Campbell is currently serving a 130-year sentence after pleading guilty to a shooting spree in 2002 that killed three people, WISH-TV reported.

He tried to recant his conviction on an appeal in 2007, apologizing for being “ present at the time ” of the deaths and saying he “ didn’t actually kill anyone, ” the agency said. A judge dismissed the appeal, saying Campbell’s statement “did not recognize responsibility,” the station reported.

The Indiana State Prison is a maximum security facility that houses approximately 2,300 inmates, according to the website.
