290 people who tested positive for Covid died in hospitals in the Northeast in February

The latest figures show that so far in February, 290 people who tested positive for the coronavirus have died in hospitals in the Northeast.

According to data released by NHS England on Sunday, the highest number of hospital deaths was within the South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust, with a figure of 84.

Trust sites include South Tyneside District Hospital and Sunderland Royal Hospital.

This was followed by 75 deaths within the Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, including the Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington, and 65 in the County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust.

The numbers cover a period between Feb. 1 and Feb. 20, and NHS England says the patients who died in the hospital tested positive for Covid-19.

All deaths are recorded by the date of death rather than the day the deaths were announced.

The organization also says the numbers may change, particularly in recent days, as confirmation of more deaths can be received at a later stage. Figures for each NHS trust for February to date can be seen below.

On Sunday, another 258 people nationwide who tested positive for the coronavirus died in the hospital in England, bringing the total number of confirmed deaths in hospitals to 81,304, NHS England said.
