If you ask the question, “Which car manufacturer makes the best cars?” you break open a big, messy can of worms. What defines the best? Is it speed? Build quality? Comfort? And who decides what’s best: car enthusiasts, soccer moms or algorithms? Well, after some rigorous testing, Consumer reports believes it has the answer: Mazda.
While not foolproof, CR has a pretty good reputation for conducting unbiased and in-depth testing. This is not just any reviewer who says the car is good. The score given to each brand reflects four different factors:
- The CR road test that analyzes more than 50 different performance areas.
- Predicted reliability based on issues identified in 17 different areas.
- Owner satisfaction based on what CR members say.
- Safety standards – you get more points when you have proven safety features all decorations, not just the more expensive ones.
For this analysis, CR also looked at how many green options the automaker offers, which served as a little extra.
And after all that, Mazda came first and took the title of best automaker PorscheThis is the top five:
- Mazda
- BMW
- Subaru
- Porsche
- Honda
I don’t know about you, but I was pretty shocked to see BMW score so high – it jumped six places from 2020 to 2021 to secure his second place.

And yes, I can’t let you go without pointing out it worst. In this list is number one for the worst car according to CR’s analysis:
- Alfa Romeo
- Landrover
- Mitsubishi
- Jeep
- Lincoln
I was also really fascinated by the fact that Genesis was the biggest mover in this entire debacle, losing 13 spaces between 2020 and 2021 to finish in 15th place. Road test scores for Genesis machines were great, but it really suffered in the reliability department this time.
