Former President Hipólito Mejía announced that he and his family have made the decision not to celebrate his 80th birthday, which arrives on 22 of this month, due to the Covid-19 pandemic hitting the country.
As usual, the ex-president celebrates his birthday every year with an ‘open house’ meeting at his home, and for the second year running he doesn’t. In 2020 it was because he gave in with the frustrated municipal elections.
In his message today, Mejía thanks God for allowing him to arrive in good health to these eight decades. He is one of the politicians who have conquered the corona virus.

In celebration of my eighty years of life, on the 22nd of this month, I would like to inform my friends and relatives that this time, due to the pandemic affecting us, my family and I have decided not to celebrate, as the open we traditionally keep in our home is customary.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank God for enabling me to reach this age in good health and to continue to work for the benefit of the Dominican people.
Now I am grateful that I was born into a Christian home where I grew up learning the value of honest work, solidarity and commitment to my fellow citizens.
It was supported by those values that I have given my best from the different areas of my public and private activities.
I want to declare to all of you that my greatest pride is to build with my dear Mrs. Rosa, my children Ramón, Felipe, Carolina and Lissa, as well as my sister Chabela, a united, hardworking family dedicated to the best of causes for the benefit of the Dominican people.
May God bless us all.
