Australians are flocking to parody sites on Facebook after news bans

What a joke!

Facebook users in Australia gathered on Thursday to parody news content after the social media giant blocked legitimate news from its platform.

The 10 best-performing posts from Australian Facebook pages on Thursday were almost all from satirical sites, according to data from CrowdTangle, a Facebook social media ownership tool.

The list – first divided by the Twitter account @ FacebookTop10AU – mostly featured posts from Australian comedy outlets The Chaser and Betoota Advocate.

At number 5 was a post from Ozzy Man Reviews, the page of the popular Australian YouTuber Ethan Marrell.

All three comedy pages previously appeared in the daily rankings of Facebook posts that generated the most interactions, as tracked by the FacebookTop10AU account from Guardian Australia employee Dave Earley.

However, it doesn’t seem like the best posts ever come from comedy pages alone.

For example, on WednesdayOzzy Man Reviews had the # 1 post, but was followed by 7 News Brisbane, 7News Australia and ABC News.

The striking change was likely triggered by Facebook’s shocking move to prevent Australians from viewing and sharing news on the platform due to proposed laws in the country to charge digital giants for journalism.

Users will now no longer be able to share Australian or international news and international users outside of Australia will no longer be able to share Australian news.
