Fernando Tatis Jr. and the San Diego Padres agreed to a $ 340 million 14-year deal on Wednesday, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed.
The 22-year-old shortstop has an average of .301 to go with 111 hits, 39 homers and 98 RBI’s in his two seasons with San Diego, totaling 143 games.
The deal makes Tatis the highest paid shortstop and the third highest paid Major League player ever. Mike Trout ($ 426.5 million) and Mookie Betts ($ 365 million) are the only players with bigger contracts.
It will also be the longest contract signed in MLB history. Giancarlo Stanton, now with the New York Yankees, signed a 13-year $ 325 million deal with the Miami Marlins in 2015. Bryce Harper signed a 13-year $ 330 million deal with Philadelphia Phillies in 2019.
Tatis, who has been employed for two years, would be eligible for salary arbitration for the first off-season. While his deal has a record length, Tatis may have put dollars on the table as he continues his star trajectory. His median salary of $ 24.29 million ranks 19th in the sport.
Tatis, who has become a superstar for the Padres, was a big factor in San Diego ending a 13-year drought in the 2020 playoffs. San Diego also won a wildcard series against the St. Louis Cardinals before the Padres passed. the rival Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL Division Series.
This is just the latest in a string of big moves the Padres have made out of season. They acquired pitchers Yu Darvish and Blake Snell in exchange for the Cubs and Rays, respectively.
The Padres also re-signed versatile Jurickson Profar, who played five positions for San Diego last season.
