Italy’s Etna, Europe’s most active volcano, erupted on Tuesday, creating a fountain of lava and sending plumes of orange smoke into the air.
The eruption forced the Sicilian airport to close Catania temporarily – which often happens when the volcano is active.
No injuries or deaths have been reported.
Residents of the village of Pedara near the crater said it spewed out not only ash but also large chunks of volcanic stones throughout the area.
“It was a shower of stones,” resident Letizia Olivieri told the Associated Press. “Something I’ve never seen in all my life.”
The Sicilian village was in emergency mode, the mayor said, while residents and municipal teams worked Wednesday to clear the ashes on the streets.
