Valheim, a Viking survival game created by a team of just five, has sold two million copies in less than two weeks. That’s … carry the five … divide by nine … a million copies a week!
That was only Friday Nathan wrote a post to celebrate the Norse nerve wracker, an article so good I installed the game before I was halfway through reading. As it turned out, I was joining quite a large crowd.
It’s fair to say that the first indie team Iron Gate is doing pretty well. The game was released in Steam’s Early Access a few Tuesdays ago and has sold over two million copies since then. the developers revealed in a post today
Their cheerfulness is quite a joy to behold. “Everyone at Iron Gate appreciates all the messages, loves, questions and thoughts from all of you, so keep them coming!” they say. “And again, a big thank you to all of you for helping us reach this ridiculous milestone in less than two weeks of sailing to Early Access.”
“Forget about sloops,” adds Iron Gate, deciding to tell us some history.[We] have now broken a record over 700 years old by having the largest Viking population in all of human history. For reference, the previous peak in Viking numbers was in AD 1300 and was around 500,000. “

In fact, they got pretty damn close to a live reunion, with 360,000 simultaneous players over the weekend. And this is less than two weeks into a planned year-long Early Access development. My back-of-a-Google math estimates that about $ 28 million will come in to them and Coffee Stain Publishing, after you remove Valve’s hefty tenth. That’s pretty life-changing money.
I’m quite excited that this can still happen on Steam. For a moment it seemed that the days of one The Stanley Parabletype of nighttime indie success was over, until the more recent sudden success of people like Among us and Fall guysKudos, iron gate. Just don’t go crazy, but be sure to buy a castle.
