Apple Watch Series 7 may bring blood glucose meter, patent describes the technology

Apple might introduce a new health-focused technology to its Watch later this year. The new Watch, tipped Apple Watch Series 7, may be able to measure blood glucose without drawing blood. And a new patent now shows how that technology can be implemented. The patent application filed with the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) entitled “Terahertz Spectrosopy and Imaging in Dynamic Environments With Performance Enhancements Using Ambient Sensors” states that the iPhone maker can use absorption spectroscopy to obtain noninvasive blood sugar measurements.

It is also mentioned that the technician terahertz could use electromagnetic radiation instead of using light to pass through the body to detect “gas, health / quality of liquid or solid materials.” But the patent also mentions a potential problem. The implementation of the technology may cause the Watch to lose water resistance. The blood sugar reading must also be accurate. If the reading is off a little, the user could end up swallowing too much insulin and cause hypoglycemic, or low blood sugar, Phonearena reports.

What’s more is that the technology can mean that the battery is draining faster than before and if the timepiece fits in all components. All of this would increase the price of the device.

The report adds that the same technology can be used to detect skin cancer and other related problems. While the patent doesn’t necessarily mean Apple will definitely bring blood glucose meters to Apple Watch, it does mean the company is at least considering working on it. For what it’s worth, Samsung is also expected to bring a blood glucose meter into its next smartwatch that is expected to release later this year.
