WICHITA, Kan. (KWCH) – Weather alert until Monday. Today, a winter storm will continue to produce light to moderate snowfall and dangerous chills. Tonight and Monday the snow is moving out of the area, but the bitter cold wind continues. Reported snow levels in south-central Kansas up to 8 a.m. range from 1.7 ″ at Eisenhower Airport (Wichita) to 4.5 ″ in Oxford (Cowley Co.). Elsewhere in Kansas, reports between 1-4 ″ are common.
More snow is expected to migrate from Oklahoma to Kansas during the day, adding to these totals. Once the storm has passed and moved eastward into Missouri, the total snow build-up should range from 1-3 ″ in northern Kansas, 3-5 ″ for the rest of the state, except in far south and southeastern Kansas (Wellington to Chanute), where 5 -8 ″ is possible. Wind chills will also be a factor with northerly winds up to 25 mph. The chills range from 15-25 degrees below zero and will only get worse tonight and Monday. The lowest wind chill values are expected in the morning hours on Monday and Tuesday and can drop to -25 to -35 statewide. Wind chill warnings and advisories are posted statewide through Tuesday morning. At these temperatures, a frost bite can occur within 20-30 minutes. Record-low temperatures are possible on Monday and Tuesday mornings as temperatures drop well below zero statewide.
Some sunshine is expected on Monday as the storm system moves east. It will remain very cold through Wednesday with high temperatures in the single digits and teens. A few weak weather systems continue on Tuesday and Wednesday, but should only produce light snow and wind. A slow warming trend kicks off Thursday through next weekend and hits the lows of the 1940s on Saturday and Sunday.
