Gaetz responds to New York nursing home scandal: media ‘absolutely guilty’ in Cuomo ‘mythology’

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., Blames the news media for putting New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo on a pedestal, despite his failed handling of the coronavirus pandemic, including withholding unfavorable information about the COVID-19 death in the state nursing home, according to a top assistant.

The assistant reportedly told Democratic leaders the government was concerned that the data would “be used against us.”

“The media is absolutely guilty of promoting this mythology of Cuomo that is belied by the facts,” he told “Justice with Judge Jeanine” on Saturday. “And the facts are getting uglier and uglier.”

Gaetz explained that the media treated Cuomo as an “oracle” of the pandemic, targeting former President Donald Trump for his response to the virus.

“The 45th president has put us on the road to the fastest and safest vaccine development the world has ever known,” he said. “And we are still seeing the repercussions of President Trump’s actions in saving lives, and unfortunately we are just beginning to reveal how much Gov. Cuomo’s actions have cost lives.”

The congressman said Cuomo and his team were able to reduce the number of deaths by ignoring patients who were exposed in nursing homes but died in hospitals.

“They did it to cover up the choices they made that put blood on their hands,” he said.

Gaetz compared the Florida coronavirus response to New York as a ‘tale of two governors’. In Florida, he said, the National Guard was used to keep nursing homes free from virus contamination while the younger, less affected generations were given free will to “live their lives.”

“While they destroyed small businesses in New York, they destroyed education,” he said. “And then the people they needed to care for the most were the most dangerous.”
